The draw for the qualification groups was held at the Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna, Saint Petersburg, Russia on 25 July 2015.

The seedings for Group D were: Pot 1 - Wales, Pot 2 - Austria, Pot 3 - Serbia, Pot 4 - Republic of Ireland, Pot 5 - Moldova, Pot 6 - Georgia

Serbia qualified outright for the Fifa World Cup in Russia with Republic of ireland advancing to the play-offs where they lost over two legs against Denmark.

Wales used a total of 21 players during the qualifying campaign.

The campaign saw a first cap for Ben Woodburn as well as 50th caps for Sam Vokes and Aaron Ramsey and a first international goal for Tom Lawrence.

Neil Taylor became the 17th Welsh international to receive a red card when he was sent off against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

Wales also registered their first ever international victory over Georgia during the campaign.
